Revalidation is the process by which the General Medical Council will confirm the continuation of a doctor's licence to practise in the UK. Its purpose is to assure patients and the public, employers and other healthcare professionals that licensed doctors are up to date and fit to practise. The RST works in partnership with the Department of Health, GMC and designated bodies to deliver an effective system of revalidation for doctors in England.

The RST has published nine example appraisal portfolios to help doctors understand what a good appraisal portfolio looks like.

The portfolios have been prepared by three medical royal colleges and faculties:

  • Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management
  • Royal College of Physicians (London)
  • Royal College of Surgeons (London)

Each fictional portfolio is based on a doctor with a different speciality but will also be relevant to doctors in other specialties. All portfolios exceed the minimum standards for revalidation.

Presented as completed MAG Model Appraisal Forms, the portfolios are designed to be viewed together, as they illustrate different approaches.

The portfolios are expected to develop and evolve in the future, as accumulating experience of revalidation-ready appraisal leads to greater understanding of good practice in this area.

By the end of February 2013, 10,114 appraisers had been trained to deliver ‘revalidation ready’ appraisals, surpassing the RST’s target of training 10,000 appraisers across all sectors in England by 31 March 2013.

Between January 2012 and March 2013, the RST designed and piloted appraiser training materials for use across all sectors and specialties.

Over 400 facilitators were trained to deliver the training consistently across the country. Two sets of training programmes were then rolled out through the regional revalidation teams: one for existing appraisers and one for new appraisers. The aim was to ensure that all appraisers were performing medical appraisals for revalidation to the same standard, providing the platform of consistency necessary for revalidation.

The number of appraisers trained represents more than 65% of all current appraisers – a phenomenal achievement that will ensure a consistent delivery of robust and valuable medical appraisals across the country. The RST would like to thank the regional revalidation teams and appraiser trainers who made this possible.

Some quotes from participants in the RST’s ‘train the trainer’ events included:

“The interactive exercises and questions raised improved my understanding.”

“A valuable day - inspired me to run a training day for the organisation's appraisers.”

“A very valuable day. I have a few action points which I need to take back to the Trust.”
